We then relax on the luxury train to St. Petersburg where we spend three days visiting the Hemitage and other cultural sites of this wonderful city that was besieged for 900 days, having the battles described to us by our guide.

From here we set off on the train for our journey to the town of Kem, where we cruise across the White Sea to the remote Island of Solovetski and the infamous Gulag for political and criminal prisoners of the state. The island was chosen for its remoteness was visited by two monks who were responsible for the building of the beautiful Monastery in its dominating position overlooking the harbour.

The Solovetski Archipeligo is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and we spend three nights here visiting the main Monastery, an isolated Skeet (Minor Monastery), the canal system dug by the prisoners, the Botanical Gardens, and the site of the executions where countless died, under the harsh regime.
