This tour takes us into the heart of the Somme and Ypres battlefields, discovering the stories of the valour of the ordinary soldier fighting against great odds. Terry Webb leads the tour, explaining the logistical supply and communication problems and the, sometimes great, distances covered by the troops before the battles started.

We travel along the Menin Road, and pay a visit to the Dugout Experience Museum in Zonnebeke, before visiting Tyne Cot, Vancouver Corner, Langemark, Pilkem Ridge and many other places of interest on the battlefield. In Ypres we attend the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate.

Day 3Sees us on the infamous Somme battlefields where we traverse the entire front line of the 1st July 1916, from Hebuterne to Maricourt, visiting Sheffield Memorial Park Serre, Beaumont Hamel, Thiepval, Albert, Lochnagar Memorial Crater, Mametz Wood, and Delville Wood.

World War 1 – Battles of the Woods

The attack on Mametz Wood, Delville Wood and High Wood

16th – 19th July

4 Days, 3 Nights

£450.00

A truly memorable tour with visits to the Somme Battlefields. On this trip we cover the attacks on Mametz Wood by the 38th Welsh Division, using the trench maps used by RSM Charles Alexander of the 14th Welsh Regiment on the 10th July 1916, when he was severely wounded. We will walk the ground, following the attack through the 'Valley of Death', down from White Trench, across the open ground and into Mametz Wood.

Here we visit the grave of veteran Harry Fellows, buried in the wood, where we have a short Service of Remembrance. After which we contine to follow the attack on High Wood, brilliantly described in The Hell They Called High Wood by the late Terry Norman, using his original maps to bring the battle alive.

From here we continue to the village of Longueval and the scene of the Battle for Delville Wood, with the 9th Scottish Division including the South African’s, so graphically described by Ian Uys in 'Delville Wood and Rollcall'.

The walk will take place over two days, at a fine gentle pace with rest stops en route where explanations will be given at specific points.

We also visit the battlefields around La Boisselle, Thiepval and Beaumont Hamel.
