About the War Research Society and Battlefield Tours
![]()
Founded over 20 years ago by serving and retired police officers, ex-service personnel and friends, The War Research Society has taken thousands of pilgrims, veterans, widows and children to visit the battlefields, memorials and last resting places of the fallen and incorporated this with interesting guided historical tours of the areas of the First and Second World War in Northern France, Belgium, Turkey and Italy.

Our Second World Tours visit, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Poland, Finland, Norway, Italy, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Singapore and Thailand. We cover the earlier campaigns with the Battle of Waterloo, and Crimea. And for several years we have organised tours to South Africa and The Boer and Zulu War Battle Sites, and Russia.
We have been proud to take members of the Normandy Veterans Associations, Parachute Regiment Association, Market Garden Veterans Association, The St Nazaire Society, Royal British Legions, The Lancastria Association, Colditz Society, Western Front Association, Friends of Lochnagar, Machine Gun Corps OCA, Local History Societies, the British, Canadian and American Armies and several Regimental Associations to visit the various sites.
We were also closely involved in the organisation of the Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July, at Lochnagar Crater, and Thiepval Memorial. We have also provided assistance to the Annual Anniversary Commemoration of the South Africans at Delville Wood.
The graphic way in which our guides bring the 'battle alive' is renowned, along with the detailed itineraries, maps and information sheets that are given out on joining the coach. Meticulous care goes into the planning of these tours. We travel with P&O Ferries using executive coaches with reclining seats, toilet, catering facilities and video system, hired through Birmingham International Coaches with regular drivers. Scheduled airlines are used for our Crimean, South African, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Gallipoli, Russia, Singapore and Bridge on the River Kwai tours.
The routes are carefully planned so that you see as much as possible; the hotels are all of excellent standard, usually family run with private bathroom, toilet, television and telephone in all rooms, buffet breakfast and 3 course evening meals. Packed lunches are available on some of the days.
Visits to all places are done in a relaxed way with ample time to see what you wish and you will not be rushed around. Entertainment is usually provided in the hotel in the evening in which you can participate if you so wish.
Are you a Club or Group Organiser? If so, why not ask us to quote you our special rates for your tours. We will do everything for you so that you can also sit back and enjoy the tour.
Please note that we are totally independent and have no connection with any similarly named society.
