WORLD WAR 1: 100th Anniversary Tour – the 4th Battle of Ypres, the Battle of the Lys 1918
4 Days, 3 Nights
A special, 4-day, 100 year Anniversary Tour covering the t4th Battle of Ypres, the Battle of the Lys in 1918.
Day 1 – This tour travels from Dover to the Ypres area and includes visits to requested cemeteries and sites en route.
Day 2 – The next day the tour will cover the initial German attacks on Op Georgette, leading to Haig's famous "...backs to the wall" order. This includes the onslaught on the Portuguese Lines at Neuve Chapelle, the defence by the 55th Division which "spoiled Ludendorff's birthday", the actions of the 11th Cyclist Battalion and King Edwards Horse as well as other actions which blunted the offensive.
Day 3 – Travelling to the northern part of the battle, we cover the evacuation of Armentieres, the struggles for Messines Ridge and Mount Kemmel, the fight to safeguard the important rail centre of Hazebrouck, and the withdrawal from the Passchendaele Ridge. We learn how the stubborn British defence thwarted the German attack.
Day 4 – Before travelling back to UK on our final day we will spend the morning in the Ypres area to take in one of the wonderful museums and make Special Visits to requested locations.
